Indian troops admit to killing innocent Kashmiris

In Indian-administered Kashmir, the country’s military has long been accused of unjustly torturing and killing locals.

However, it is rare for people to admit to killing innocent Kashmiris through abuse of power or drama. However, Indian forces have acknowledged abuse of power during the killing of three Kashmiri workers in a coronavirus lockdown last July.

A spokesman for the Indian Army said on Friday that it had killed three unidentified “rebels” in the village of Amshipora in Shopian on July 18. Now the investigation has revealed that they were residents of Rajouri district, whose families had alleged that they had been killed in an arranged gunfight.

Indian Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said in a statement, “The investigation into the Amshipora operation has been completed as per the instructions of the army authorities.” The investigation initially found evidence that the armed forces had exceeded the powers that be exercised under the Special Powers Act (AFSPA) during the operation.

He said, “Preliminary evidence collected in the investigation indicates that the three unproven terrorists killed in the Amshipora operation are Imtiaz Ahmed, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Ibrar.” They were returning from Rajouri. Their DNA report is waiting to come. Police are investigating their links to terrorism or related activities.

An earlier police statement had claimed that army officers had been shot during the operation.

Shortly after the incident, pictures of the three victims went viral on social media. From there, relatives identified them and accused them of illegal killings.

Naseeb Khatana, a cousin of the slain Ibrar, said after the Indian Army claimed responsibility for the illegal killings on Friday that the dead were all cousins. They went to Shopian from Rajouri for work.

“They arrived in Shopian on July 17 and we last spoke to them that night,” Naseeb said. It was during the lockdown, so we thought they might have been quarantined. We were waiting, but there was no news. ‘

“After seeing the pictures, we identified the relatives and lodged a complaint,” he said. The army claimed they were terrorists. How much more can they do wrong to innocent people! ‘

Another family member of the victim said that even after a long search for the results of the DNA test of the relatives, it has not been found yet.

“The samples were taken on August 3, but the results have not come yet,” he said. Calling one of each family today, they admitted that three people had been killed in a fake gunfight. We want their killers to be brought to justice and punished. We want the bodies of the family members. ‘

Ibrar was the youngest person killed in that fake gunfight in July. His family said he was working as a day laborer to study.

Human rights activists claim that Indian troops in Kashmir continue to kill civilians for financial gain and medals, often calling them ‘rebels’.

Such incidents have happened before. Protests erupted in the valley in May 2010 after Indian police killed three civilians in a gun battle near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Machil area. The soldiers killed the three innocent people in the name of reward and branded them as ‘armed rebels’.
