Political analysts see a number of reasons behind the low turnout in the 2021 Hong Kong elections. It has been seen that 58 percent of the votes were cast in the 2016 election. Pro-democracy activists won more than half of the seats in the election. But this time the record amount of votes has fallen. This is the lowest turnout since Hong Kong was annexed by China.

During anti-government protests in 2019, Beijing enacted a national security law in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong people’s movement was further intensified by accusations of “repression against political dissidents” against the Chinese regime. Many freedom fighters are now in prison after renewed repression in the region.

But in the run-up to Sunday’s election, the Chinese government says Hong Kong has the rule of law and democracy is on the right track.

In 1997, Hong Kong was annexed by the Chinese from the British colony. Since then, Hong Kong has enjoyed the status of autonomy under the “One Country, Two Principles”. Although Hong Kong is an autonomous region of China, it has its own judiciary, legislature and security forces. Hong Kong is an autonomous region of China known as the commercial hub of Asia.
